Seems to me that cull cows sell on their basic condition. Buyers don't want them overly fat.  Why not let them raise the calves to normal weaning and then sell the cows?  Feeding cows corn every day or "hard feeding" them doesn't seem necessary as long as you have decent hay then grass.
