I think 'the right direction'---is important as body score.

You are breeding the very hardest cow to get bred---first calf heifers for second calf.

they are :
having to meet their own maintenance requirements
growing themselves
feeding current calf
getting body in shape for rebreeding

last is lowest priority---they might take a little longer to rebreed

good health and mineral program, good feed, fertile bull----and some will still be late or wash out.

but most won't--and gotta sort 'em out sooner or later
