NE Iowa | I would probably prefer to use NH3 but am afraid of erosion on our steeps hills. I agree that liquid is too high $$$. Dry urea, usually treated with Agrotain, will sit on top of residue and wait for the first rain to dissolve it, wash it off the residue, and it will soak into the ground. It actually takes very little rain to do this (~.25"). Once in the soil N will move down through the root zone fairly easily. With too much rain this movement can sometimes be too fast causing the N to leach out. I've raised some really good corn with all dry on top. Urea is quick to spread and cheap in my area. Last winter could prepay urea at $267 per ton and that included spreader usage, blending if necessary, and delivery. I have gone to applying half the N a week or so ahead of planting and the rest I apply to ankle tall corn to protect against too much rain. | |
