West Chazy, New York | In theory, all that trash that is holding up your nitrogen will release it in 2018. The gospel of no-till says you have to be planning the crop you will plant in two years and at some point your main concern will be where you will store all your corn, as your bins will be too small. There is some truth to that, but as corn yields (and residue) have increased and stalks have gotten tougher the equations have changed some. Livestock producers who bale off their stalks and replace them with manure are actually closer to "nature's way" than those who want to see a thick layer of trash on their fields. They have less slugs and armyworms too. |
