If it is a nice car that you plan to drive and since it was your grandpa's car I think you should bite the bullet and have it fixed properly by a professional. I have seen many old cars with back yard body work that could have been nice and worth some money if they hadn't been screwed up. Get it fixed right, clean the gas tank, replace all the wheel cylinders, hoses and master cylinder, rebuild the fuel pump so it is compatible with today's gas and start having fun. I'm sure you will find other items that need fixing but thats part of the old car hobby. Once you get the bugs out you should have a car that is dependable that can be driven most anywhere. You will not have to worry about the check engine light coming on. Good luck.
