I'm not sure trying to concentrate the water will work well.

Such an application could keep a plant alive, but it will not let it thrive.

The roots need to explore and reach. They need to follow the water through the topsoil?

A narrow rich band of fertilizer can be a good thing for the plant to feed from easily.

A narrow wet band for the plant to drink from just sounds fundamentally wrong?

Sounds like a good experiment tho, keep us informed! Sometimes we are surprised by the results we get.
