SWSD | I was going to title this "where do microbes vacation in the winter", but my question is this. If you do vertical tillage to help with residue breakup, get a little soil contact, smooth out combine ruts, etc., what is the best time of the year to do it? I personally don't like fall because of the long period of erosion exposure over winter, no stalks to catch snow etc., but it is a nice time of the year to get things done.
I understand the microbes don't do much for residue decay over the cold winter months - not sure what they do, or where they go - deeper, or hibernate, or what? (Arizona maybe). So if you vertical till in the fall just before freeze up, or perhaps just before spring thaw when microbes are least active, which time is the damage less to soil health? | |
