Subject: Early cover crop for sand ground

west central wisconsin

Hi all.....

So, We farm a 28 acre parcel of junk sand that grew a decent corn silage crop this year.... just harvested yesterday.

In the 3 seasons we have farmed it, we have limed it and added more nutrients than we removed..... and had back to back soybeans (20 and 30 bushel crops) and corn this year........

Only Rup and 4 oz dicamba was used, so we are open to plant anything......

This is extremely coarse soil, probably with a gravel base.....

We are a dairy, so are considering no-tilling alfalfa into it NOW, or possibly adding a cover crop such as medium red clover, that could add some N before next spring and plant corn again.

Considered cropping rye, but currently have enough growers locally to provide us with the straw we need.

Would just as soon keep the experiment cheap, but what might some of you consider adding for a cover crop in this scenario.

Thank you for your time and suggestions..... Also, I plan to do this asap, and could use a no til drill or hire an airflow......
