| We have a couple acres that we do produce on - pumpkin, sweet corn, green beans, okra. I would like to get away from spring applied chicken manure. Seems like weeds are harder to get a hold on and excessive N caused me some issues this year - lodging, excessive vegetative growth. Would it be wise to apply 2 ton an acre of puller/layer litter along with cover crop and then side dress nitrogen next year, as particular crop requires? Planning on doing it as soon as it dries up and I have time. I am concerned about pigweed and shattercane making good use on N and crowding out my cover. Also don't want excessive growth and winter kill on hairy vetch and triticale.
I am in Mid MO.
Cover crop mix is oats/rape/tillage radish/hairy vetch/triticale and would be plowed down in May. | |
