Subject: Second crop millet.

Big Sky Country
I bought a pivot this yr, put hay barley under it and got that off.

Would like some more hay, seed guys suggested millet, thought I'd try it, if not hay, maybe some fall pasture.

Soil is heavy clay loam, top 3" hard and dry. Moisture underneath.

I put half an inch on to soften it up, seeded around 1/4" deep last Saturday and have kept pivot running. I've got about 3" on in that time, brown moisture probe goes in about 2'.

I broadcast about 40# N with a little sulpher as soon as done seeding.

It's Siberian millet, about 220,000 seed per lb.

Seed guy said up to 30# this late.

I did a little math, my figures were 3 seeds per foot of 7" spacing row for every pound of seed.

Seemed like a lot of seed, I cut it back to 18-20#

Plants just emerging in last day or so.

Killing frost maybe around sept 15.

I might run out of water, not sure how much it'll need to make crop, not sure how deep roots will go to go after it. Not sure how deep need to water.

first experience with pivot.

Pretty darned ignorant about what I'm doing.

Any input on any of the above would be very welcome. Tia. lj
