Subject: Cover Crop Question

NE Oregon
I usually lurk around on stock talk but I have a question more appropriate for this forum. Our rotation is 4 years in alfalfa/orchard grass and one year rotating out into a grain hay (usually beardless barley and oats with red clover under seeded) with 5 fields, we are rotating one out every year. Normally we wait until as late in the year as possible to spray out the alfalfa field and then graze it off. We want to spray it off earlier and no-till in a cover crop with the primary function being grazing, break up the soil, and cycle nutrients.

Being new to cover crop, I am asking everybody I know about what to put in our mix and thought I would pose the question here.

Planting in the next couple of weeks, and beginning to graze the first of October. What would you plant? I'm looking at mixing Japanese Millet, cereal rye, triticale, Forage radishes, and turnips. I'm sure there are pros and cons to every type of plant, but again, primary function is to graze off backgrounding our calves.
