North Central MO | Just to report on our experience with planting corn green. Last fall we planted radishes and winter peas the last week of August into mature cereal rye that was prevent planted soybeans. The rye also sprouted and there was a lot of volunteer rye. Corn was planted with 6 gal of 2-15-19+3S in furrow and 20 gal of 22-5-5+3S 2x2 giving about 50# N. We went in to sidedress by dribbling on top of the ground with 85# N through 29-0-0+3S around 6/8 and missed al rain events after that until 6/20-21 where we recieved 2.75" of rain. Walking fields today our corn planted green is 2 leaves behind corn that was planted 5 days later. Same area same hybrid. The corn has looked very stunted and not growing very well since about V7-8 but before that it looked great. I think the amount of rye straw has created a carbon overload for our soil but someone smarter than me may be able to shed some light on our issues. We will not be planting corn into cereal rye anymore after this experience but would be open to trying other covers.
