ottertail co mn | Anyone know how to buy a semi load of rail road ties? Or is there a better corner post that I should be looking for? I am a newbie when it comes to fencing. My goal is to build a heavy duty fence. My neighbors have crappy fence and I don't wanna be like them...

Flat rock, Illinois | Do you have hedge trees in MN? If so get your saw out. I would put a good hedge post up against a tie any day! Crooked ones even give you fence character. Ha

Northwest kansas | We use pulled out power line poles. They are very good size and already have a good layer of protectant on them. Railroad ties last maybe 5-10 years for us. Haven't replaced a pole yet

SW, Missouri | I would never consider a tie for posts. "Here" they just don't last.

NE Minnesota | Railroad ties will be excellent for you especially if you want a semi load. You can't buy directly from Burlington Northern as they use a contractor who gets their used ties. There is a tie processor in Duluth. Maybe there is a processor closer to Fargo. Give me couple days to get a number for you.

NE IA | Find new ones then you have a long term post

ottertail co mn | We must not have hedge trees cuz I don't know what they are. I cut around 20 to 30 chord of wood a year. Thanks

ottertail co mn | They last quite well here. 30-40 years is not out to f the question. Thanks

ottertail co mn | That would be great. I would like #1 or 2. They are getting hard to find around here so I figured I could be the outlet around here. I will need half a semi load myself. Thanks for your help.

Southwest Missouri | Hedge or steel pipe here nothing else is even considered

Northern Minnesota | I have used over a semi load of railroad ties as corner post. Got them for free when they abandoned a local track, so they were used. Most are going on about 30 years. Replaced only one. Not due to rot but my (un)controlled ditch grass fire!

Culbertson, MT | I generally use ties. Just bought 4 bundles (16 per) for $12.95, from salvage company out of Colorado. They were along the main line just south of me. Heavy as he11, should be good #1's. I have some pipe we plan to use this year, have only used it in the corral in past. Here's a tip to help a tie (or any good wood post) last: use gravel to back fill. The moisture will wick away, and easy to tamp! I have some in my corral that are set that way, have been there for 35 years and still solid.

Doon Sawmill handles new and used, if you can use a whole load you can usually get them cheaper and shipped right to you.

NW MN | Tie will last a long time up this way. Erskine Rail Car has them. $4 a tie (last year) loose. Otherwise Gully Coop has 16 in a bundle on a pallet for about $160 a bundle

North Mo. | frozen ground (and not rotting) one third of the year!! Be my guess gosh 30 years doesn't seem that long to me, that would mean I have to replace what I put in after the Army. Gee still using Hedge,Osage Orange from World war 2 times.

Built our home fence in 1976, used new 6" creosote posts. Fence and posts great shape yet! 40 years!

Marion,ks | Buy pipe and cement them in . That's all we do now,I am tired of replacing Hedge corner posts. Rail road ties and used utility poles are even worse than hedge. Pipe is way easier to work with and does not burn .We burn our pastures off on a regular basis and lose a hedge corner post about every year.

Central Illinois | BlueDriller - 4/28/2016 04:38 This guy (me) has no idea what hedge is. I am amazed how few know hedge. It is all I would use if I had enough access, and I was not ocd. We have a small 150 ft row left. Look up osage orange. It is the only fence you put in the ground once for 2 generations of farming. Dont know how the stuff does it but it wont rot and will outlast most metal posts. The OCD part comes from it never being even kind of straight. If you could make the stuff straight it would be #1 for everyone. Edited by ben5398 4/28/2016 07:53

Marianna Arkansas | Unless your in a area with rocks use steel and drive them in. Faster and eaiser and cheaper in the long run.

northwest tennessee | We have a big place here that treats ties and sells to the railroad. I used to be able to buy seconds that were treated for brace posts. They would weigh about 200 pounds or more and were good posts. Now they wont sell treated posts anymore for putting in the ground because of the EPA. You can buy untreated but I don't do that.

Driftless SW Wisconsin | Jed, when you and the others above talk about "steel" fence corner posts, what type of "steel" posts are you talking about? 3" oil pipe? galvanized or bare?

Montana | Klamert at Fort rockvale Montana has ties but that is a long way to haul. I like upset pipe 2 and 7/8 and then fasten galvanized wire panels between them. Make two 8 foot braces from one 16 foot panel. I suggest if you use pipe you cap them there to keep water out. I can share pictures if you want.

Jim that's exactly the size and kind and way we build them. I bet my pipe comes from the same place direct gets his too. I can't remember the exact sizes we use though.

NNW Nebraska | No hedge grown around here. I have planted a lot of them, but anymore, they are really expensive around here. A local dealer handles them, but price is same as a creosote. If not using a post driver, I would use hedge. Also it is almost impossible to get hired help to set them so they look half decent. Lots of guys are going to post drivers & I doubt hedge would work good for that. Would hate to have to redo fence corners made with rr ties. Any fence I redo, I don't plan on having to redo it again in my lifetime.
Nebraska Sandhiller |
| ||
NNW Nebraska | If you are set on rr ties, the hard ones like oak don't seem to last as good. My guess is that the creosote does not soak in as well. If you want a fence thst will last, use hedge for corners, and build good box corners. If the wires stay tight, that is the main thing in a good fence. If you use hedge for line post, drill a hole through the post to fasten wire with. Run a piece of high tensile wire through hole, around post and barbed wire& twist ends. Barbed can slide through if you ever need to stretch it. Di it that way, and when you are out fixing fence, you mostly just drive when you get to a stretch made that way. And for hedge line post, do not get the tiny ones, they do break. Get likr 2.5 in dia or bigger. I do have a hedge gate post that needs replaced, that my dad set, back when I was a little ankle biter playing in the dirt. Probbly the late 60's. Semi turned going through gate. We won't talk about the damage to his cattle trailer! If you don't want to build box corners, then you need to use something huge, like bottom of power poles. Those are hard to find in any qusn5unless you recently had a bad ice storm.

You can buy untreated but I don't do that. also the reason that 30 year old railroad ties are proably better than a new one. I think "good" creosote posts are a thing of the past thanks in part to the EPA.

Montana | We use 2 and 7/8 upset pipe that has been tested free of radiation. Instead of welding pipe or rod, we just use half of a 16 foot galvanized wire panel and wire it to the pipe. Then we connect wires to the fence end and the squares in the wire panel hold the wires at the right level.
