Subject: Low spot in concrete carport

BENTON, MO

My carport has two low spots that hold water when it rains.  It needed more slope when it was poured, but it's too late to fix that.  Anything that I can do now to get it to drain.  It's aggravating in the summer months, but dangerous in the winter when the water turns into ice.

Drill a 1/2" hole through the slab at the lowest point of the puddles to let the water drain out.

+1. I had a contractor to the exact same thing about ten or twelve years ago. One spot was toward the front of the carport and we drilled several holes. It works fairly well. The other spot is nearer the carport entrance. We took a circular saw with a masonry blade and sawed out a shallow channel for the water to drain. Can't remember why we didn't just drill holes at both spots...

They make a product you just poor on the concrete to fill in the low spots. Can't recall the name now but it comes in 5 gallon buckets.

I think the leveling compounds available are mainly for interior jobs to level floors before laying flooring, and especially tile floors.

You can cut a nice straight saw line thru that area that has some fall to the edge of the slab. I would not drill a hole and let the water go under the slab if you are in cold country.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I had thought about the saw idea, but was afraid of the concrete cracking there.  Might try the 1/2" hole as we are in Southern Missouri.

if you use a saw, you will need to keep a broom or knife handy because crud fills the crack quickly.

North Mississippi Delta / Alabama Gulf Coast

If you don't want to saw the slab to drain it, get a good wet vac on wheels and suck up the water. Might help to seal the slab when its dry to keep water from soaking into concrete as well. Don't drill it, water under the slab will cause problems.

BTW- those low spots are caused by concrete too wet, as when adding water after the pour has started or second load has wetter slump than first load. Floor patch wont fix a low spot.

That looks aggravating right where you get out of the vehicle. Two other things you could consider. If there is a place where you can drain it off you could try grinding out a drain. I'd make it wide and smooth as possible so it's not too noticeable. A bigger project would be to cut about a slot in the concrete and put a small drain in and then concrete over the slot.

The holes work good if the base is gravel but not on compacted clay.

NC Iowa

Cut a square hole in it, dig down a few feet install a perferated tile, fill with gravel and either pour in a nice drain with a removable top or install a plate over the top with lips aroound the edges to keep it in place.

Have a concrete guy come in and grind the whole thing back flat. Dont fill the low spot but cut down the high spots.

Buy one of these and grind a wide channel to where it will drain. Used one and works fast and leaves concrete smooth

Is this the grinding wheel you were talking about?

The smooth finish on concrete isn't very thick. I ground some down at my place and you don't go far before you start exposing rocks. It is smooth, but looks funny.

I would try drilling the holes or enclose the sides so water doesn't get in there to begin with.
