Subject: Issue Outputting GPS to John Deere 2630 From Trimble

Here is the situation......On a customers machine I'm trying to output GPS from a Trimble 750 display with an EZ-Pilot connected into a John Deere 2630 which is running is planter. The 750 has a modem importing corrections on Port A just for reference.

Using the advanced port setup in the 750 here is how I have port B configured going into the 2630:

Baud: 19200

Data bits: 8

Data Parity: None

Stop bits: 1

NMEA Messages: GGA-5Hz
 GSA-5Hz
 RMC-5Hz

Everything seems to somewhat work but on the run screen it always says "No GPS signal" no matter what I do. Cranking up the message rate doesn't do anything and neither does changing the baud rate. Below is a couple of pictures to explain further, the other thing I can't understand is why the HDOP numbers on the 2630 don't match the ones on the 750. In the pictures below they are pretty much the same but I have seen the 750 report an HDOP of 1 while the 2360 was showing a crazy high number of 3.5.

Another thing I tried was just setting the display for WAAS because I thought my port A configuration for the modem may have been throwing a wrench in the works, even on WAAS I never saw anything change much.

First picture is of the 750, this display is not unlocked for GLONASS so we are only seeing 7-10 satellites and the HDOP is slightly higher than I normally see but not horrible.

Here is the first GPS screen on the 2630, can anyone tell me what looks out of place in here?

Here is the second screen, as you can see we have a lat/long, altitude, etc.....nothing out of the ordinary.

Here is the thing that I don't get, the main run screen keeps showing "No GPS signal" but I'm not getting any warnings at all.

I believe you need to set the data bits to 6 when exporting to a Deere display. I'd have to double check to be sure though.

That would seriously be awesome if the problem is that simple, I spent quite a bit of time messing with it. Please let me know if you find anything out.

Thanks

For testing purposes use waas and send it out of port a. Never have had a lot of consistency using port b

Yes, this is correct.

I was kind of wondering if the advanced port setup was too good to be true....I've never used it before.

Try it first, it may work fine. If there are still some consistency issues I have another trick up my sleeve, but I don't want to send you in changing things if we don't need to. I ran into some similar consistency issues with other Trimble issues when running other third party equipment and was able to resolve it. My email is in my profile as well if you prefer.

Just did this on Friday. Under the NAV tab on the Pro whatever, under NMEA messages change LLA precision to 6. Don't even need to reboot.

I think Mountain is possibly referring to the decimal precision instead of data bits (tomato tomaato).  It looks like you have GSA and GGA coming through by the looks of the screen (you have Lat/Long and DOP/Satellite Id's).  I think the decimal precision needs to be set to 6.  By default I think the 750 outputs 8 or 9.

In serial terms, if the data bits, typically 8, are set incorrectly you shouldn't show any values as the sender/receiver are not on the same settings (data will be invalid).  Whatever each end is set to, they have to be equivalent.  As you are getting some data it appears your serial may be set up correctly. Typically 8n1 (8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit).  Be careful of going over 5 hz on 19,200 with anything more than GGA, GSA and RMC turned on.  You may run into bandwidth issues at that baud for 10 hz and 3 messages.  Behavior can be unpredictable.

Link to previous discussion with setting the decimal precision on a 750.  It's in the advanced port config "wizard" on the 750.  Be careful of firmware 6.xx on the 750 as the RMC output appears to not be fully functioning (mentioned in below post).  I am guessing this is what softtail is referring to with issues on port b.

NW Ohio
Trimble by default is outputting 8, John Deere by default can only accept 7 or less
