Subject: John Deere 4440 hydraulic seat problem

John Deere 4440, 1982, quad range.
Seat has never worked since I bought the tractor. I installed a new (charged up by Deere) accumulator. Seat still does the same as it did before new accumulator install. When tractor starts the seat will raise all the way up regardless of height setting. It has no cushion or bounce. When tractor is off the seat will go down. There is no obstructions under the seat. Need help on what could be the issue. Thanks for any advice.

Have a 4650 with a similar problem. The long story short was this...... The drain tube from the seat actuator had back pressure from were it drained into the top of the transmission case. Nobody knows why it has pressure, cause there is not suppose to be any. I took off the drain hose and lengthen it and now drain it in a catch 1 gallon jug. The seat now works as advertised until the jug gets filled to the drain tube and starts to draw back in the fluid. Empty jug and your good to go again. A gallon jug will last a year before it needs to be emptied.

Mine will do same on starting. go all the way to top. can then adjust with handle Is aggravating to put you up to roof on starting though..Can get away from that if we hold the adjust handle down on starting.

The seat valve has a spool valve that controls the seat base position by oil flow to an attached one way cylinder. The cylinder oil is also tied to the accumulator that cushions the cylinder piston to provide the ride. The cylinder has a leak off line that lets seepage oil return to the transmission case. The seat valve contains a pressure reducing valve and the position spool, that have o-rings that need replacing due to age. You can remove the black plastic panel below the seat and check out the linkage to be sure its functional but a seat valve removal and overhaul is most likely the fix. There a special tool needed to pull the pressure reducing valve out of the housing. Hope this helps.

On The South Plains of Texas
Have seen the pressure line to the seat at the attenuator tee connected to the wrong side and do this. Seat side is orificed and brake side is not. Something to check especially if the cab has been off and on.

Had same problem with our seat. We changed the accumulator cause it was empty and could not be recharged cause it had a leak. Still the seat was hard with no movment. Played around with the lever for the firmness of ride and it happens to need to be in a specific spot and seat works fine. Just a fluke.

Here is what repaired my seat. I carried the under seat valve and cylinder to johndeere and had them rebuild it with the rebuild kit. I reinstalled the valve and before I installed the seat assembly I started the tractor and played with the adjustments to make sure all was good. All cost to repair the seat system was $535. $285 for Deere to rebuild the valve and $250 for a new accumulater from all state Ag. This battle wagon rides much better now.
