Subject: RE: Does a poor mans tile plow exist.

west central Iowa
I bought a used Johnson tile plow and get along fine with it on a JD 8640 4x4. My plow with a 4" boot can place tile at 48-52" before I need a pull. 6" tile would be a bit shallower. My plow has two hitches on the front, top for main tractor, and bottom for the pull cable. I was able to buy the plow and the cable from the same fellow. Sometimes the places that need the tile are slick and you need 2nd tractor for traction. We use IH 4186 or 305 as second tractor. Cable stays under 8640 when plow is hooked up. Cable is 100,000# pull rated and factory eye on each end.

We put a tile feeder on plow, that was money well spent.

If you have rocks in your area, we pre-rip where we are going to place tile. We have hit rocks that stopped the tractor. We end up ripping around the rock and keep going. Much handier than when you are laying tile and hit big rock!
