I would suggest buying the John Deere "Fundamentals of Service"-Air conditioning book to start with. Then start buying tools as you need them. I would get a guage set/can tap first so you can charge up low systems which seem to be my most common problem and go from there. Just remember to always have the high side valve on the guage set closed and use the low side to add freon to the system with cans. I'm told the cans can explode under the pressure of the high side while running.
