Subject: JD 8420 Radio Wiring

Southern Ontario

My neighbor got a new to him 8420 that the previous owners butchered in a Pioneer radio. Some of the speakers dont work and they half a$$ the other connections.

Does anyone have a wire diagram for the 8420 radio harness?

TIA

Good question, I'm putting a different radio in a 4720 sprayer. I found some help from
doing a google image search on Delphi radios. Needed special plug ends from dealer, now
just to get them right, to use the multiplug. There are 8 speaker wires alone.
I hope someone can post this also.

Sorry. Not familiar with the green numbers. Fixed it for you.

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I've done some of this with swapping out radios to different brands. Sometimes an adapter cable is available and makes life easier. With older tractors (4440) Deere often used a single wire to each speaker and a common frame ground. The newer radio I was trying to install didn't use frame ground. It would cause problems if you did. I removed the ground wire from each speaker and was able to put in a new wire from each speaker to the radio.

Then through trial & error I was able to figure out which wires did what. On a newer tractor the their were two wires to each speaker. But with four speakers there were 8 wires are really 4 pairs. I did a trial & error thing until I got the first speaker connected to the correct pair of wires. Then I went to the next speaker, since there were only 6 wires left at that point, this went faster. Then I was down to four wires left. Again trial & error. Once I figured that out, the last two wires had to go to the last speaker.

Most newer radios will need ground, constant hot and switched hot. The constant hot is not always in the tractor radio harness. Usually you can pick up a constant hot from the cab light.

The 8420 should have all the wires present. The color codes are somewhat standardized at least for ground, power, switched power. Some of these radios will have a lead for extending a motorized antenna. Normally that lead would not be used in a tractor.

The easiest way I have found is get a schematic from Deere printed off, aftermarket radios if not plug and play are a pita, Scott.

John, email me. I figured out the wiring as JD wouldn't give me any info.

I believe the pinout of the radio is called "ISO." I tackled it several years ago and found an adapter on ebay to match my aftermarket radio to the tractor.

I guess if your plugs have been cut off, my diagram won't help.

I figured it out. Just had to pull the headliner down a bit to see what the wires going to the 2 left side speakers were. All the wires are numbered so it's not that hard. Used a multi-meter to read the constant and switched powers and everything works now.

Thanks for the help guys.

If it was for my tractor (Case IH) the service guys would have sent it to me no problem. For some reason the Green guys in our area are all a pain to deal with. That's the main reason we are all red.
