I have a friend that has a John Deere 318 riding lawn mower. She said it would not crank and I checked it and it was not firing. It has the Onan engine in it. Anybody got any ideas as to why its not firing. Coil has been checked. Also it has a hydrastat transmission. How do you unlock/unpin the transmission so you can push the mower so you can load it on a trailer. TIA.

Lever on outside of tractor frame by top of right rear wheel.rod pushes down on buttons on top of tranny. There is a switch when Hydro handle is put in neutral spot.If you jump off seat and the Hydro handle is not exactly in neutral it will kill engine. So problem may also be in seat sensor.

I looked at getting a 318 month ago and buddy said stay away unless it been updated. I asked about what he said something with oil pump was mounted on side of motor and if you mowed ditches on one side it starved the motor for oil and wrecked the motor. Anyone else hear or see that.

akrumy- that advice applied to the 317 which came before the 318. 317 had a Kohler engine that wouldn't last on hillsides. Folks who kept 'em flat got a lot of life from the Kohler. Back in the day, many 317s were repowered with the Onan engine from the 318.
