Subject: JD 4440 Implement Light Kit

Freedom, WI

We want to wire up the 4440 (1980) to be able to have the 7-pin light outlet for pulling wagons. Tech stopped out today and said there was a kit we could order. Looked for a while online and came up with AR78052. Is this able to plug into the V-shaped connector sort of behind the battery box on the (I think) right side or do we need something different? He just made it sound like it was a "plug and play" type of kit. If this isn't it, do you have any other suggestions?

I added a kit to my 4040 of about the same age. If I remember right all the connections are made at the right battery box area. I think the V shaped plug is used plus I think you have to tap into another wire. The directions were with the kit.

The kit came with 2 dinky metal strips to hold the socket to the remote valve. Either make your own or get one from a 50 series which is more metal and is cut out to accept the socket.

Here is the 50 series piece and part number I will look to see if I still have literature for 7 pin kit.

Edit: On mine there was not very much extra wire to get the splice made. I've found the literature and am scanning it and will add it in a few minutes.

Edit 2: Okay here are the pages from the section for a 4440 tractor. I uploaded them to my Image Event page and then embedded them here so I could make them large enough for you to easily read. Sorry for the huge size but it will give you the best picture details of what to look for.

The price of the Deere kit bothered me to the point that I bought a 7-pin receptacle, the Deere bracket to mount it to the SCV, a length of 12 ga 7 strand trailer wire (about 5 feet was plenty) and a few Packard 56 series terminals and shrouds and made my own setup for a fraction of what Deere wanted. Most of the Packard terminals will plug right in to the tractor wiring harness, as I think I only had to splice a couple wires under the right front part of the cab. This maybe doesn't answer your question very well but I thought it was a good alternative at the time that I updated two of our 40 series tractors.

I remember the kit being sort of pricey for what it was way back then and the special mounting plate was high as well.

The kit you mentioned AR-78052 looks to be more involved and possibly ties in at the relays under the dash ? Perhaps provides more functions  to the 7 pin outlet such as 12 volt power to a trailing implement ? and for heavier socket loads ?

RE-17282 is the kit that ties in by the right battery and is what I used and referenced in my other post.

Thanks Von. Figured the JD kit would be a bit pricey, but I don't like wiring and dad can't stand it either so we both just want something we can put it ourselves and not have to worry about screwing something up. Trust me, I have already messed up some wiring projects this week. I will look into the second one you have listed.

Double check with your tech to see which one he suggests for your intended use and which will be the safest setup for the number of lights you intend to use.

LED lights on the wagons would probably reduce the current being drawn.

Northeast Missouri
I know that you need the relay kit for half-width disconnects on Joihn Deere planters.
