Ea. Washington | The general cause of axle bolts coming loose or broken is a tweaked axle. Pull the axle and chuck it up in a lathe. The axle face has a centering taper and the splined end can be chucked. Both ends should have a centering taper. If the axle is twisted a little the plate will wobble and you have about a 3 ft lever prying against it as it turns.
If it is not to bad just take a shave off the inside face of the plate to true it up. Have done this on a couple 74 7-800 Fords and worked well. Never came lose again. Helicoil works on lose bolts in hub.
GMC same deal. Left handed drill bits work good to take the busted studs out. Try it.
If the wheel bearings were a little loose before you did the brake job it might of allowed the hub to wiggle around enough to compensate for the tweaked axle or you might have tweaked it hauling corn. I'm sure you tightened them up when you did the brake job.
