| We are directly under a major corridor for traffic from Boston, DC, and Chicago to Vegas, LA, and Phoenix among others. It's fairly rare to see, but does happen. One day last summer, we had multiple jets in a racetrack pattern overhead, which was unusual enough that I started trying to figure it out. One of the airports (think it was Las Vegas, but memory is a little hazy on that now) had an issue of some sort so they were holding traffic way out here in Iowa for an hour or so.
If you have a smartphone or tablet, Flightaware or Flightradar24 are great apps for airplane watching.
