I love my Ram...but hate the fuel economy...Just did 1300 miles trip and averaged 14 mpg, driving 65-75 mph. Has anyone had any success with the delete kits out there? I don't need more power, I don't tow that much...Are the 13's with DEF more economical?

Dearfield Co.
My def pickup had the 3.42 gears if I remember right and was a 14. Had the azian trans or what ever it was called and did 20 unless you ran the crap out of it 75 and 80. I sold it and took a 11 in on trade that does 13s. I have a h@s tuner for but a friend said it only gave him about 1.5 mpg. I wish I wouldn't of traded down but the 14 had recall after recall. Sad thing is the 11 has done the same

My 12 has been trouble free,,the fuel economy kind of sucks...I would not do the delete if I only gain 2 mpg...recalls yes...front wheel bearing at 65000 cost me $600.00...but that's been all that has cost me uot of pocket...I am running 34" tires which probably hurts the econ some, but I would think not much...Ram is my favorite right now and so I can't get excited about trading since the New Rams are exactly the same.

I have a 2012 Ram 2500 MegaCab 4x4, I put an H&S and delete kit on it from new and run it on the hot tune. Definitely bumped the power but mileage really varies, Highway miles 65-75 it will stay over 20 mpg but with lots of stop and go it will be closer to 14 or 15 mpg. Pull something behind it and it will be down to 11 or 12. Overall, I would recommend the tune and delete kits, no problems at all with it.

NC Iowa

Anything with def will be more economical.

Just talking with a friend that has a 13 ram.  Drove 500 miles straight through and did 20.  The chevys and fords with def are pretty similar.

The 2012 Ram 4x4 megacab dually sitting in my yard (not mine) with h+s cranked + transmission tune loaded, egr and dpf delete, big exhaust etc gets 21 mpg on highway at speed limit. Around town 15ish. Owner said it was about 15 hwy before he tuned/deleted.

A buddy of mine had a nice early 90's Cummins and a 2007 Cummins 4x4 with the 5.9. Very low mileage on the '07 and no issues with either. His wife didn't like the height of the '07 and refused to ride in it. So to satisfy her he traded in both trucks for a brand new 2012 Cummins in the same year. He has regretted it a lot. Said the pickup gets pitiful mileage and isn't used to pull trailers. Last time he mentioned, it had less than 10,000 miles on it because he dislikes driving it.

The mpg went up considerably after the 2012 model years. The DEF and some others tweaks added a good 4-5 mpg. I've seen it first hand comparing my 12 to my brothers 14. His 14 will better my 12 even more on open highway trips.

I did a egr delete, smarty tuner, and 4" turbo back. My is a 2009 mega 3500 single wheel 4x4 automatic. My best is about 18.5mpg. Average about 14-15mpg. Tuner made me about 30 more HP and it shifts better. All this gave me about 2-3mpg extra. It eliminated dpf problems and any other engine issues due to emissions.

Thanks for all the reply's...if this truck made 17 mpg on the highway I would love it...not sure that 3-4 mpg justifies a new truck...$1000 bucks a year in fuel savings could be had,,,food for thought....Delete costs about 2 years fuel, by then I will want something different, so I guess I am stuck!!

went with a friend in his 09 mega cab dually desil pulling a 20 foot gooseneck skid steer style trailer with 3 side by sides and 2 four wheelers on it all the way to Colorado about 65 mph getting 7.1 -7.5 haha there is a lot of 7.1's between Missouri and Ouray Colorado haha I really feel that a standard transmission would of added 2 mpg but just a guess. seems like it probably shifted up and down 23 million times give or take a million on the way there and back.

I'm in the exact same situation with my 2012 Cummins. It bothers the heck out me to see the mileage my brother gets with his 2014. It just doesn't make enough economic sense to trade newer for the gain in efficiency here either. I've even considered trading for a new gas burner that will get about the same mpg as I get now empty.

My 14 only had 4000 miles before it was in a serious accident. But it was getting around 5 mpg better than my 12. The 14 is just plain nicer than the 12. Didn't cost much at all to trade, that's why we did it. We bought the 12 with big rebates, and got big trade in for it. A friend of mine traded a low miled 13 duramax in for a 15 real cheap. So I thought let's see if I could trade cheap for a new ram that was nicer, so I traded my 12 st in on 14 Laramie. Figuring sticker price to sticker price, difference was 3900. I gave up a set of aftermarket rims that had been on 2 trucks and I had to buy a new gooseneck hitch. I thought it was a good deal. Low mile nice diesels are in demand. My 12 was only on autotrader a few days and it was sold (i watched their ad). Here's the 12. Oh the 3900 difference is if the sticker price was the same on both trucks. I'm not saying you can go from an st/tradesman to a Laramie that cheap! Don't forget your 500 rebate for ffa alumni members

Tuning these trucks is quite a bit more economical now that Efi Live offers support for 2010 & up Cummins trucks. I have nothing against a H&S tuner (we used to install a lot of them) but they are a few reasons why I prefer Efi Live now. Cost and quality of tuning would be to main factors. 6.7 Cummins would be one of our most common platforms to tune. I suppose it's easy for me to say but I think you'd be very happy with how your truck runs after tuning with exhaust / egr mods. Results obviously can vary for different trucks depending on previous condition / working order of emission equipment as well as weather, driver habits, etc, etc. Just my opinion. Depending on your dealer's perception warranty could be a sticky situation should you do tuning and exhaust / egr mods. Email in profile if you have any questions.

Millhouse...my thoughts exactly...it won't make sense till you see that truck that catches your eye and then you can rationalize the trade, how it works for me!!

I guess I will have to keep shopping...My 12 with 65000 miles was gonna cost about $20000 to trade for the same exact truck set up,,,with running boards, Chrome mirrors, grille inserts, B&W hitch, aftermarket tires etc...it was about 20k....in real dollars. I couldn't even trade for another low mileage 12 for 3900...I guess the market is too good for trucks in South Dakota. I might try again next week, now that the end of year push is over and the winter doldrums have set in. thanks for the info.

I did this in early September. My 12 only had 15000 miles on it. There was 12000 sticker difference between the 12 and the 14, st to a Laramie, traded 15900, so 3900 difference sticker to sticker. I would call dealers a little ways away. I bought mine at dodge of Burnsville(suburb of Minneapolis). They are the biggest dodge dealer in Minnesota. Another guy I know traded a 14 duramax for a 15 that he didn't have for 6 months. The dealer called and asked if he would. Traded for like 2000, dealer said they needed nice used diesels for Canada. He's a pretty straight shooter. Put your truck on craigslist, it'll sell. What is your truck? I looked at a 14 longhorn, but it was just too much more money than a Laramie. The 14 also has more hp than the 12 too, so even though it has higher gears than my 12, you don't notice. I also had a really stripped down 08 before the 12(black grille, manual windows and locks) traded that in on the 12 in 13. Had 88000 miles? (i bought used with 50000 on it) I got like 21000 on trade with that, and it was 5 years old. Surely your 12 is still worth good money.

Just traded my '12 big horn 2500 for a '15 Laramie 2500. Milage is definitely better. Too early to get firm numbers, but I'm going to say at least 3 mpg better. Its also quieter, rides better with the rear coils, and the interior is much nicer IMO.

Before I traded, I had everything I needed to delete my '12, but never did it. Still have a few parts if you go that route. Email is good.

Pretty funny, when I bought my 12, everybody was all wound up to get a late high output 12. Then found out the mileage and interior were way better on the newer ones. Part of the selling point of the 14 was the fact I heard the urea engines can actually run better and just after treat the exhaust. So it's supposedly better for the engine. As far as deleting, I won't do it while it's under warranty. The Laramie package is ridiculously nice. I don't think there is any truck as nice as a longhorn or a limited. Sharp 15!

I think a 12 Laramie is worth around 34k trade in...the problem is that when I bought the 12 there was a 10k rebate...not available last time I checked..I love the Laramie Package, I have Lariamie, 2 tone Dark Pearl Blue Paint, quite a bit of chrome, etc,,,sharp truck for sure...I have a f350 dually too so I might go back to 1/2 ton...just have to see the right truck I guess..there is an Identical truck on the lot in town here..lower miles but otherwise identical and they want like 39k for it.. I think its easier to trade a little later in the life cycle,,,cause that is how I got the Ram, cause the 2-3 year old used were too close to the price of a new truck....so many angles to all this!!

I don't know what part of south Dakota you are in. But if you can't make a deal in sioux falls or Brookings or Aberdeen, then it might be worth the drive to the twin cities. They've got close to 10k in wiggle room on a new truck. Then they try and make it up on your trade. Just get a number in your head, and stick to it. You can do most of the deal from home on the phone. I got that 10k rebate on my 12 when I bought it too. But that rebate cancelled out some others. There's the ffa alumni discount, and the case new holland discount. You can get get a deal if you stick to it. Look up Laramies on autotrader.com, then start calling dealers. I worked with Mike varner at dodge of Burnsville.
