My L8000 has the 7.8 ford diesel with a spicer 5 speed transmission. I have a slight rear main leak and the clutch feels as if its slipping but I've never smelled it. The clutch is mechanical linkage and I've never tried adjusting it. I have some pics of the linkage and transmission numbers. Maybe someone can tell me about what type clutch I may need if adjustment doesn't work. The rear main seal leak doesn't seem near severe enough to cause the clutch to get wet but I have been wrong before.

A lot of heavy duty trucks have to have the clutch adjusted at the pressure plate . On the few that I have done, there is a 12 point bolt that faces the rear of the truck that has a lock ring around it that has to be pushed in then turn the bolt , by the way the clutch pedal has to be held down while you turn the bolt .

How much free play is there in the clutch pedal? You adjust it like VR said through the inspection hole at the bottom of the bell housing

It's probably a pull type clutch, freeplay decreases as the clutch wears. No freeplay the clutch will slip, hopefully you can salvage it by adjusting it. Those rings can be a bugger to loosen for adjustment, I've used an air hammer to get them to move but I have manged to adjust all the clutches I've tried.

This transmission doesn't shift like a semi truck or road ranger style. Its necessary to clutch it at every gear change, just like a pick up. That being said, does it still adjust like a semi truck or can the clutch pedal linkage just be adjusted?

So it's a synchronized transmission then, could be either type clutch, you could see by looking up into the clutch housing. If there is no access hole in the bottom I'm pretty sure it'll be the old push type.

There is a 3"x3" inspection hole underneath, with a grease fitting attached to a line, which I'm assuming is going to the throw out bearing. I haven't looked up into the inspection hole yet. When I do I'll report back, and tell you what I see or maybe get a pic.

The model number looks like ES65-5A. Here is the service manual for that transmission: http://www.tremec.com/anexos/ES65-5%20CM50%20Service%20Manual.pdf

Unfortunately, the clutch that you asked about is not part of the transmission, so this service manual will not help you with your issue.

Send me an email, I'll email you pictures of pages out of my 1992 Ford L-Series service manual that descries how to adjust the clutch. The file is too large to attach to this forum.

To adjust the clutch I guess I need to remove the 2 bolts and rotate the clutch to the next slot for the bracket to lay in and lock it in place? Which direction should I rotate it?

Goes clockwise, probably have to go several slots till you get 1 1/2" to 2" free travel on the clutch pedal. Need to either block or have someone hold the pedal down while your adjusting it.

Is there anything recommended for cleaning the clutch area, such as using a pressure washer up through the inspection hole? Perhaps lot of carb or brake cleaner?
