The dimmer switch on my 1998, 8300 doesn't work. How do you get at it? and what all do I have to take apart so I can fix it .Its stuck on the low beam side, so when im in the dark working ground some of the lights don't come on. Really sucks.

Take the steering wheel off then there are screws the hold the housing together where the dimmer switch is located. I had that problem with my 8100 as well. I took it apart and switched the spring for one out of a pen that was not as stiff and it's working again for now.

Move the steering wheel all the way out, and there are 4 screws behind the switch. Take those out and the bottom half you can slide all the way down. Unless I was missing something today, the dealer said $325 for just the switch. Ours is stuck on high so we didn't need it that bad.

Take it apart. You might be lucky enough to have a soldered contact break. That fixed one I worked on. Before you would have to hold the switch to make the high beam work.

newark.com is where I bought the microswitches for $7.35 plus shipping to fix my $325 dollar dimmer switch. Less than an hours time with a screwdriver and a soldering gun and it works like new. I did a search on NAT and found newark.com. This site is great!!

Just make sure you get the right switch. There are several in there if I remember correctly. They are all the same, but it took a little bit of time with an ohm meter and a little bit of tracing wires to figure out what each switch did. It wasn't as obvious as I thought it might be. It's not that hard, you just have to think through it.

Thanks for the info.  I took one apart on Dad's 8100 once and switched out the switch for flashing your high beam (Pull back on lever) with the high beam switch constantly on (lever pushed forward) to get the lights to work.  The problem with this is you could not get into the diagnostics on the tractor since they use the high beam flash to enter the computer.

I knew there had to be a cheaper source of switches than through Deere.

To the original poster, I think there are five little switches in the box (horn, high beams, high beam flash, left turn, right turn).  Take apart carefully, there are some small parts and springs that can come out.

Here is the link to what Greg mentioned.

+1 ...Got my switches from radio shack. The factory ones were sealed, which sealed in the dirt apparently because the new ones aren't and they have many more hours than the originals.
