| Europe has an interesting system. The Dutch apparently aren't even using their own wind energy. They buy German Nuclear to keep the grid consistent and export the extra energy the windmills generate. I just read an article last night on how Texas, who has about 2% of their energy from windpower, is having trouble with brownouts because of the problems of keeping the grid consistent when the wind stops, or blows too hard. Also, those windmills are going to be maintenance intensive compared to most conventional plants, and they are very dispersed. The solar setup the Germans are experimenting with, where you get to sell your excess(if there is any) during the day, then use back off the grid is interesting, but, you still don't overcome the problem of the cost and energy used in the solar cells themselves. Maybe some of this flexible thin film technology can overcome that. If I wanted a personal alternative, I'd look at a big pond and hydropower. At least it's consistent. | |
