The switch is in the door latch.

One local dealer's cure is to tell the owner to pull the door trim and fiddle with the switch until it works.

One on-line cure is to spray the door latch liberally with WD-40 giving a little bit of lubrication (mighty little) and close the door 4 times. I did that to my '98 F-150 driver's door two or three years ago and haven't had to repeat it yet. $1.69 for the smallest can of WD-40 and 2 minutes sure beats paying for dealer shop time.

In June I picked up a '03 VW Golf. It had the same problem. After gathering the shop manuals they didn't even admit there was a door switch, much less where they are located, but the WD-40 has cured the Golf's door ajar alarms for a month anyway.

Do all the doors while you are at it.
