Subject: RE: Corn reel and down corn...stress?

Central Iowa
This was on a Gleaner Hugger 8-30 head. The brackets bolted down to the top side of the back frame and then the height adjusting chains were attached to anchors that were fastened to braces on rear of head. We had cracking start on top rear frame of head until we reinforced with channel iron underneath. That said, we really had no other choice but to use a corn reel. We also learned to wait until dew had dried and to not figure on running late in the evening either. The stalks would have a tendency to wrap on the reel when they were a little damp. The wrapping is most likely what caused the majority of the stress on our corn head. (stresses the operator as well) The wrapping quickly leads to bouncing. The good news is that when you finally get the wad of damp, tough corn stalks dug loose and digested by the combine it is dry enough to work right!
