Subject: JD 7810 MFWD won't disengage 4wd in off position

Southeast Nebraska
Have a JD 7810 MFWD.
When the 4wd switch is in the off position the 4wd does NOT disengage.

When it is in the on position it stays on.

When it is in the Auto position the 4wd stays on but disengages while the brake is pressed like it is supposed to do.

Thus, it works correctly in every position except in the off position.

Any ideas why the 4wd doesn't disengage in the off position?

We had a 7700 jd that the fwa was engaged when the switch was off. Our system was spring pressure engaged and hydrualic pressure to disengage. Our tractor had a hydraulic leak where it engaged i think. Wouldn't hold pressure so first they tried to rebuild it and then later put a new one on . Can't remember the cost but think that piece was like 800 dollars

Shouldn't the fwa come on when brake is pressed?

There's a big bellows hydraulic clutch to disengage mfwd, it's spring applied. Sounds like yours is leaking. In that case the mfwd light functions as normal.

If your mfwd light is on with the switch off then your have a simple electrical problem.

Mfwd should engage with brake pedal, not sure what it should do it you only press one brake pedal.

I can't remember exactly but that hydrolic clutch quit on our 7700 and it would not disengage at all. There is a electrical connection under transmission area kinda in front of drawbar adjustment that can get unplugged and will cause issues but I think light will blink not sure though.

If mfwd WILL disengage in auto mode when one brake is pressed, it's most likely not a hydraulic or mechanical issue. Put the switch in the off position, key on, find the mfwd solenoid valve on the bottom of the drop box, check it for 12volts, I'm betting you won't find any power there. I would start with checking fuses, relays, and the switch itself to start with.

Have a 6400 that did the same thing. Wire under the cab was shorting out while running over hay. Don't know if it's the same as your tractor though.

just a tish NE of central ND
The front end turns on when you drop the voltage to the solenoid that runs it. It was designed that way. If you have a blown fuse on the electrical or a wire loose it will turn the fwa on constantly.
