for your first effort learning how to make a cable, the best example you can have is to buy a cable you would like to duplicate from the vendor of your GPS receiver and "reverse engineer' his design by taking it apart and putting it back together and seeing that is still works. then buy the connectors that were used and some jacketed cabling of the same wire size and make another one with the same pinout and connectors and test it to see that it works like the original. web vendors for connectors are companies like Mouser. they have an extensive on-line catalog and accept small orders and credit cards and give good service. to answer your specific question, if power is not going through the cables, then usually 22 or 24 ga wire will work. if power, you might need lower ga, like 18 or 20. Some OEMs use only 18 ga wire because they are more rugged, but sometimes 18 ga wire is hard to work with because it is larger than the hole in the connector pin. a lot of OEM cables use crimp connectors instead of solder cup connectors, and you might not always be able to find a solder cup equivalent for the crimp connector. Crimp contacts are very reliable with the correct crimp tools, however the crimp tools are usually pretty expensive.
