Driftless SW Wisconsin
I agree. We have a number of customers who are farming and holding a full time job in town. Their limiting factor is time. You can strip till 300 acres with 6 row equipment and a 100 hp tractor (you do need 3 point lift capacity if mounted) very nicely and in a timely manner. You can do it but you have to do it carefully. You can NOT afford the time, fuel and equipment to do it the conventional way. You can borrow equipment but you can't borrow time.

One other idea - why grow beans? Why not just 100% corn? If it is prime ground and you can raise 200 bu corn, and for ease of math use $3 as a possible/likely price in the future:

200 bu corn x $3 = $600. gross/acre to work with compared to 50 bu beans x $6 = 300. to work with.

Rent is the same for either crop. Half of your bean gross will go to rent. With corn it is less than 1/3 for rent. Cost to raise good beans is not THAT much different than good corn, if you use newer approaches.

I would also aproach the owner and ask/negotiate a bit lower rent since you are "just getting started". Maybe they will help you out. Emphasize how well you will take caref of their land. Offer to do some extra mowing along the roads etc for them in appreciation for rent help.

jmho.

Here's a photo of a system we ran in MN last week. You can do corn on corn with this simple 3-pt machine in the spring, put all of your N down as liquid 28% on one side of the strip about 5" deep just ahead of the planter. Have the coop or you broadcast (my coop loans out spinner carts with the fertilizer purchase) dry p&k for now. Best of luck to you.
