To windrow wheat straw. Book says you do only on a 9400, but with the deflector straight down it hits the back of the spreader and likes about a foot being able to crank it all the way forward. Looks like the short belt won't reach either. Wondering why the book would say only the 9400 if it has to come off on a 9500 too. Actually now that I've looked at it more the top edge of the spreader is just catching on the panel that sits vertically under the end of the walkers

If I understand you right u just wanna run the chopper all the way ahead and put the deflector down. U don't want the chopper running just hang the belt on the hook above the pulley.

Edit to add just reread your post, if you remove the deflector will 5 he chopper clear the spreader? My experience was if the chopper wasn't the whole way ahead straw wouldn't flow in a heavy crop.

All we ever did was crank the chopper all the way forward and let the fins hang.

SE Nebraska

Ive never messed with the chaff spreader on our 9500.  If I remember right:  you roll the chopper all the way ahead on the track.  I also believe that you have to put a belt on the chopper and make it turn, I think.  If I remember it had something to do with keeping the material flowing out the back of the machine and not backing up into the walkers.

The book says that except in corn the spreader should be turning to keep fro stuffing up the walkers. I've never tried this so not sure if that will be a problem. The top edge of the chopper just catches by about 1/4 inch on the removable sheet under the end of the walkers. I could take it out but maybe it's made to work like that. It would clear the spreader with the deflector off. If the walkers don't choke up it looks like I could leave it like this and run the chaff spreader and not the chopper.

They make a short belt to run the chopper in the drop the straw position.

Its all in the operators manual.

Central Illinois

Walkers are shorter on a 9400, so tail section is shorter.

Chopper has more room to move forward on a 9500?

With the chopper where it is I don't see how anything would go through it because the back edge is even with the back end of the walkers. Everything off of them will fall behind it. That being said not sure why the chopper would need to run. Leaving the deflector on would keep straw from getting on the chaff spreader so it looks like I could run that too.

Crank it forward and lock the pins, she's good to go ! The chopper needs to turn so chaff does not build up on top of it. BTW I believe the chaff spreader thing is run for everything but corn or run slow to not throw cobs in chopper belt

Chaff between walkers would build up in chopper pan and hit walkers . Hook up short belt and take tail board off 2 bolts in pic . Set chaff spreader to low speed if its got the valve .

I know you want the fines spread with that spinner but the book shows Deere's double spinner. That Vittitoe, or how ever it's spelled or pronounced for that matter, is longer than the one pictured in the book, thus causing problems. (?)

Short belt on the chopper and the tail down. Match the chaff spreader speed to the header width. BTW -- chopper on the slow speed with the knives out.

Remove spreader or run the short belt. Straw will build up and knock the walkers out if you don't run the short belt, trust me.

Take out the two bolts that the fins pivot on and drop off the tail fins.

We have to do this or it hits our header trailer hitch.

+1 on taking out the 2 bolts and removing the tailboard with the chopper spread fins on it. Problem solved.

Up until this year I combined oats with a 9400 and we just took off the tailboard to give us more room. We also bought the short belt to keep the chopper turning after running our first season without it. There were about 2 wheelbarrow loads of chaff packed in the chopper after the first season and you all know how much fun oats chaff is to mess around with........

Remove chopper, if you roll if forward, how do you grease shoe brgs, not fun, use a fork lift and drop assy, Scott.
