Subject: RE: Original Starfire to insight Cable

Problem or Situation :
The StarFire provides GPS information to GreenStar components through the CAN bus. StarFire can also send GPS information to other controllers (non-John Deere) through RS232. The NMEA 0183 strings that are capable of being included in an RS232 signal from StarFire include GGA, GSA, RMC, ZDA, & VTG strings.

The NMEA strings that the controller requires need to be determined from that manufacturer. If, for instance, the controller requires only 2 NMEA strings, the other strings may need to be turned off. Sometimes, if too much information is sent to a controller, it can get overloaded, and cause performance issues.

Solution :
Configuring the RS232 to work with the Non John Deere Controller

There are 2 ways you can change the NMEA Strings and Baud Rates for RS232 on a StarFire receiver.

Hook the StarFire and a GreenStar Display up to a GreenStar Harness. Go To Setup – StarFire – Page 2, the information on this page is the RS232 information. You can change the following RS232 output settings on this page.

Serial Port Baud Rate 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400

• Serial Port Output Rate 1, 5

• Serial Port Message GGA on/off

• Serial Port Message GSA on/off

• Serial Port Message RMC on/off

• Serial Port Message VTG on/off

• Serial Port Message ZDA on/off

2 Hook the StarFire up to a computer with Laptop Harness, Part number PF80388 (MIB 00-10-11), and utilize a program called “StarFire Desktop Configurator” (sometimes called “StarFire Config”) which is available from www.stellarsupport.com. When this program is communicating with the StarFire, the NMEA strings, Baud rate, and position update rate (hertz) can be changed.

NOTE:

• StarFire Configurator is not compatible with TCM Today. When hooking a StarFire up to a Laptop for use of Configurator use the PF80364, StarFire Extension Harness (43673_1.jpg).

• Turning NMEA strings off or changing the Baud rate only affects the information from the StarFire on RS232. The StarFire data on CAN is not affected.

Connecting StarFire To a Non John Deere Controller ONLY

Use the following directions to hook the StarFire up to a Non John Deere Controller if you are NOT using the StarFire for AMS Products (i.e. AutoTrac, Field Doc, ect) at the same time.

Utilizing StarFire Extension Harness (PF80364) - See 43673_1.jpg above

Note: You will hook the following wires to either the 12-pin connector (X10) or the 10-pin connector (X11), but NOT both.

1 Connect +12VDC to the appropriate Pins on either the 12 pin or 10 pin connector:

• 12 pin Connector Pin 6 and 12

• 10 pin Connector Pin B and F

2 Connect a ground to the appropriate Pin on either the 12-pin or 10-pin connector:

• 12 pin Connector Pin 7

• 10 pin Connector Pin E

3 Connect the RS232 Receive line from your Non John Deere Controller to the RS232 TXD on the StarFire.

• 12 pin Connector Pin 3

• 10 pin Connector Pin G

Utilizing StarFire/TCM Extension Harness (PF80575) - See 43673_2.gif above

Note: You will hook the following wires to the 12-pin connector (X10). The TCM Corrections are transmitted via RS232. The GPS Signal being output to the Non Deere Controller via RS232 will be corrected for slope if you have the latest StarFire Software and TCM Software. See DTAC Solution 58333 for the latest Software Versions.

1. Connect +12VDC to Pin 6 and 12

NOTE: It is very important that you get power to both pins or the Receiver and TCM will not Power up.

2. Connect a ground to Pin 7.

3. Connect the RS232 Receive line from your Non John Deere Controller to the RS232 TXD on Pin 3.

Utilizing StarFire/TCM/RTK Radio Extension Harness (PF80611) - See 43673_3.jpg above.

Note: You will hook the following wires to the 12-pin connector (X10). The TCM Corrections are transmitted via RS232. The GPS Signal being output to the Non Deere Controller via RS232 will be corrected for slope if you have the latest StarFire Software and TCM Software. 3. Connect the RS232 Receive line from your Non John Deere Controller to the RS232 TXD on Pin 3.

Connecting StarFire To a Non John Deere Controller and GreenStar Ready Vehicle.

Use the following directions to hook the StarFire up to a Non John Deere Controller if you are using the StarFire for AMS Products (i.e. AutoTrac, Field Doc, ect) at the same time as the Non John Deere Controller.

NOTE: The StarFire in this scenario is being used to Run AMS Products, therefore you do not need to power up or ground the StarFire. This is being done through the GreenStar Harness already.

Utilizing StarFire Extension Harness (PF80364) - See 43673_1.jpg above

Note: You will hook the following wires to either the 12-pin connector (X10) or the 10-pin connector (X11), but NOT both.

See DTAC Solution 58333 for the latest Software Versions.

1. Connect the RS232 Receive line from your Non John Deere Controller to the RS232 TXD on Pin 3.
