For our customers, the majority need the multi-product unlock because they will be doing either split planter and/or planting with another product such as starter fertilizer or chemical application.
Without the unlock you are not able to get the areas that allow for those setups.
With the unlock you setup the planting portion of the planter first (it could be single variety or split) then you have the option of adding additional equipment beyond the planter. This is usually application equipment.
The varieties are entered into the planting side as products. The chemicals are entered ino the application side as products.
Your workaround was necessary due to the lack of the multi-product unlock.
