Subject: Looking at drapers, Cost of replacement draper belts for a Macdon FD70 40'?

NE ND
Need to buy a header for a JD 9870 I bought this winter. Would like to go with a 40' draper. Main reason in my brain is that if they feed as superbly as everyone says maybe I could pick up some speed over an auger head. I don't trade often, will run this combine till probably 4-5K hours, has 680 hrs now.

Here is my heartburn....went on JD parts tonight.......all five draper belts for a JD 640FD total up at $7064 without tax!! As Deere parts prices seem to march up over time by the time I might have to replace all five the total might be say $8500. I find this to be insanity......just my opinion I guess.

How do the draper belt prices on a MacDon compare? At least there are only three belts. Is there any aftermarket sources for Macdon draper belts?

I have a Macdon 972 harvest head on one of their swathers and absolutely love it, thing cuts like a Ferrari IMO in most conditions. If a Macdon draper combine head would perform that well on my combine I'd be a pretty happy man.

The hard part is there are some really nice 635F auger heads with air systems for some very reasonable prices these days.

by the way I've read zillions of the threads on drapers and didn't find this issue talked about much so that is why I'm asking.

Good question on the price. I have no idea what they cost. We have five season on a 35' FD70 and the belts still look like good. This head is a 07 model that we purchased used and I am sure they are still the original belts. I just don't see having to replace the belts very often.

Good choice on looking for a 40'. We run a 9860 with our 35' and I really wish we would have bought a 40' right away. Make sure to check the pulley speed with a laser tach, many were not set correctly. Ours was only running 450 RPM and I turned it up to 700 RPM, much better cut now.

if i remember corectly the long belts were 2000 and middle belt 1000 from mcdon. unless you you pickup something sharp laying out in the field you very seldom have draper problems. youle never regret buying one. only down side is it's hard to throw reside 40 ft.

We run 2 35' FD70's. They are 11' models. We had 08' models, the 11's are quite a bit better heads, lots of improvements. The three things I don't like are how heavy they are, the split reel, and how many fricking grease zerks there are. It takes a good two hours to grease the whole thing. You don't have to grease every zerk regularly, most are 50 hr zerks. If you go with a 40, it will be a split reel, irregardless of brand. The JD flexdrapers look nice. I have heard they are better on flatter ground, and the Mac Dons do better on terraced ground.

Hope you have the 26' auger. We as well have a 9870 paired with a Macdon FD70 40' head. This fall will be our fourth season of this pair. Wouldn't have it any other way. The Mac don seems like such a simpler machine compared to the deere. Due to some unfortunate circumstances I will be installing new draper belts before harvest this year. This is not normal and its not the headers problem. I thought they told me that the belts were under a thousand per side, but I have been wrong once before.

I'm sure the reason the belts weren't talked about much is because it's not much of an issue. If it's not a super-high acreage head, has been stored inside, and they've been running true (almost impossible for them to NOT run true with the grooved canvas), they will last many years. And, as mentioned, if you do need them, Westward is your friend. They have them cut to length for Deere, MacDon, and Honeybee. Almost half of Deere's price.

Legg belting was about half of the local macdon dealer here on my 30' 960. Heavier belts too. I really like them. About $1200 iirc last set went 3-4 year and a lot of acres on a swather cutting wet and heavy materials

We buy draper belt by the foot $25 from an after market supplier I would think that you would have an equivalent company in the US and it would be less than what we pay. It doesn't seem to matter which brand of machine you are fitting to they have one to fit and little variation in price.

We just bought a side belt from Macdon for our FD70 35' and it was $860. We checked with the Case dealer first because they were closer and they were $1370. Case must be jacking the price since they came out with thier own head.

Hi Linton, I'd really like to know where you get your draper belts please. Thanks, Scott, Burren Junction, NSW
