Subject: Need Crary air reel help.

Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND
I am adapting a JD 925 flex head with Crary air reel to my old 1480 IH combine. The header was last used on a JD combine, and something in the hydraulic reel drive plumbing has me puzzled.
Part of the crary air reel kit is a Gresen pressure relief valve installed in the reel drive line at the female ISO coupler.( photo below) This pressure relief valve is shown in the Crary operators manual in a JD installation. Can anyone tell me why this valve is installed in series with the reel drive motor and what it does ? If this valve has a very soft spring installed,it would work as a check valve to prevent reverse rotation of the reel motor, but if it has the standard spring installed, the tag on the valve says it is set at 2500 psi. If this is in the return line from the motor,it seems it would apply 2500 psi of back pressure to the motor seals, which cant be good.
Can anyone tell me if I can or should leave this valve in place on my old IH with its open center reel pump ?
