Excellent post, thanks for starting the discussion.

There is no doubt as we study history that erosion is a very real problem and a very real threat. Modern farming methods are starting to address the problem but it seems we still have a long way to go.

I can't help but wonder if water is going to be the more pressing issue though.

25-30 years ago I was talking to an older farmer/neighbor whose son was working for some type of "think tank" in Washington. He predicted that in my lifetime ( I'm 44 now) the far West would no longer be the breadbasket it was (at that time) because of a lack of water. He said dairyfarming would no longer be possible there as dairies require huge amounts of water. At the time I thought he was a little out there because back then the West was THE place to dairy.

He doesn't seem so far off any more, especially with the current water issues we read about.

Any thoughts?
