The horrors of erosion may miss the mark.

 

They miss the effects of Plate Tectonics pushing the elevation of numerous surfaces well above sea level.  

Plus it forgets that gravity is going to pull or push these elevated land back to sea level.

 

If erosion was all that bad around the time of the American Revolution Memphis would have been on the edge of the gulf of Mexico. Not only would New Orleans be under water but so would Biloxi and maybe Lake Charles

 

Yes numerous cities are buried under feet of accumulated soil and dirt.  Some from blown in Volcanic Ash. some with soils from the deserts. If the Middle East is any guide a good bit of the accumulated Dirt is accumulated around and by the good people occupying the towns and cities of the area. 

 

Gravity is also at work  with  subsidence.  Not only are the buildings of New Orleans settling into the mud but the entire city is also settling. When Founded New Orleans was on high ground.  To take care of a short term problem the City was hidden behind levies keeping fresh deposits from maintaining the level of where the city from being replenished by the contributions from the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.

We can also have an accumulation of dust on furniture  and appliances and toys of all sorts. 

I suspect this Popular Press Contribution has an agenda behind it.
