This happens more than we think. A few weeks ago, the local paper featured a kid with severe leg injuries who got hit by a lawn tractor backing up. The father (I believe) didn't know the kid was nearby. Sorry for the fuzzy details. My thoughts at the time were that this was exactly the situation the safety interlock was designed for.
