Having used both types of mixers before, I would only use a vertical mixer for mixing any large amounts of hay. We had a Knight reel auggie and a Gehl auger mixer and neither one could handle much hay without wrapping around something. Then we got a used Knight 5042 vertical mixer and used that for 3 years before trading for a new Penta vertical mixer that we currently use. I mix 6-8 loads a day and put in 1 or 2 4x5 round bales in each load without pre-processing. We liked our Knight, except we bent the flighting down on the screws from dumping 6-10 bales in it a day. So far the Penta seems to be holding up nicely and we really like the front conveyor on it. Not much to them so there is not a lot that can go wrong compared to auger mixers.
