With a good pump you don't have to take the timing cover off to remove the drive gear, or the pump Assembly. To remove the gear, take the nut off, and drive two screw drivers, or small chisels between the front plate, on the front of the engine and the drive gear. this will pop the gear off the shaft. In your case , with the gear in the pump loose on the shaft, you may have to weld the gear to the shaft, in the back of the pump, so the shaft doesn't slide forward when you try to pop the gear off. The gear in the pump is a tight press fit, and sold as one piece with the shaft. I think the gears in the pump are sold separately, or replace the pump. When the pump drive gear comes off, the left balance shaft will get out of time. To retime turn the engine till the right balance shaft heavy weight is down, and set the left balance shaft so the weight is down the same as the right weight.
