Well, first of all, you can't polish chrome...............chrome has a coating on it and if hand polishing it doesn't make it shine, nothing will. Second, if the aluminum or stainless is pitted, you need to think about sanding it...........us a small orbital sander and some 600 grit aluminum paper. You then want to come back in with a buffing wheel...........yellow canvas-type is the prefered color. You can use a red wheel and skip the sanding, but most detail guys recommend you don't use the red wheel....besides that, when you're done with a red wheel, you need to come back in with a yellow wheel to get a mirrored finish anyhow.. Most guys use the green buffing compound, but if you need to cut deeper you can use some of the red compound. Red compound cuts deeper so when you are done using red, you need to come back in with the green compound for a mirrored finish anyhow. It's just a LOT faster to sand and come in with a yellow wheel and green compound.........then you're done.

Compound can be found on this page: http://4statetrucks.com/index.aspx?sNode=C_189&EXP=Y&iABSP=...
Wheels may be found here in these pages: http://4statetrucks.com/index.aspx?sNode=C_392&EXP=Y&iABSP=...

If you want to do hand polishing, don't waste your time with polish from walmart. Get some of the green liquid stuff from a truck stop or make your own. Take a cheese grater to the green rouge and put it in mineral oil.............that's basically all the good truck polishes are anyhow.

Peterbilt dealers carry all of these items but they are available online at places such as www.4statetrucks.com as well.

We hired this truck done.............cost $30 a wheel to do and $10 for tank ends, etc. As cheap as that was, I can hardly afford to do it myself if we've got anything else to do. That's where I learned how to do most polishing anyhow. Plans are here just to hire it done, and then do it ourselves for 2-3 years and if we are starting to get behind just hire him to do it again.

Here is a closeup of the wheels before sanding.

Here's a picture of after sanding and using a  yellow wheel and green rouge
