Orange County NY
This may not be a possibility for you if your barn is shot, but have you thought about automatic takeoffs for your stanchion barn.
I milk 40 cows also. About 8 yrs ago I upgraded my line to 2 in. and replaced my 4 units with 4 automatic takeoffs. I found myself standing around so I ordered another. Had 5 for several years and still had to much time just watching. I milk with 6 of them now in a head to head barn. That makes for a little extra walking. Wish it was tail to tail.Takes me 1 hr. to milk by myself. They save you one time bending over or kneeling. Might not sound like much but that is 80 times a day to remove a machine. I trust them and cull the old dogs who have udder trouble. One high SCC cow will kill your quality premium anyway with only 40 cows. My SCC count runs 100-150,000 consistently.
