Subject: RE: further comments on plowing

ND Dave,

Yes, we have most of those ground-tunnelling species on the Plains.  Long-term no-tillers simply ignore the holes (even while spraying at 14 mph), or if a spot gets bad, such as a coyote den, they drag a scraper around to fill it in.  It is a bit of a problem, but not enough for people to give up no-till (and some of them do have alfalfa in the crop rotation, established with no-till).  In a few severe instances, it requires dragging a tined soil-engaging implement very shallowly to smooth it up -- but certainly not plowing.  I wish we had a better solution, so if anyone has one, lay it on me.
