Subject: adding row of lights to wilson hopper bottom

I have been kicking around the idea of adding a second row of clearance lights to my hopper bottom. I didn't know if anybody else has done this before, and if so how hard it was to do. I doesn't seem like it would be difficult, but I was just curious if anybody has done it before. Thanks.

Did it on an old american. Wilson should be easy where it has the little half round trim piece that encloses the wires.

Montana
DOT requires all mounted lights to be working so in rural Montana, some have taken off the extra lights. They sure look pretty but sure can cause problems. I was shocked to learn about that as I watched a friend removing the purty extra lights from a trailer and a really nice Peterbilt Truck.

I've been thinking about adding a 2nd row on our 2007 Wilson but haven't found much info on it and I don't want to start drilling and figure it out as I go

Dearfield Co.
I have done it and it sucks--------most harnesses are strung pretty tight for the bottom rail of light so you drill your hole take your number nine wire and fish it thru to the bottom and here is where the issues comes getting enough slack to splice in well.Personally I say up date it and get the lights you want with other things improved as well.I have even taken the lining loose in a timpte after I pulled everything into and I promise that wasnt a good day.

As far as the DOT goes that is a federal law that all installed have to burn.Only some places are chicken enough to enforce the chicken light rule

Like a couple of others said---why add lights, you just have to keep them working LOL. Not trying to start something here but if guys have time to play with lights , maybe they don't have enough to keep them busy LOL. Really, have any of you been " t-boned" at night because the other person said they didn't see you for lack of lights down the side of your trailer LOL?????

LOL-------------
I bought a group of plain vanilla reefers that only had 3 per side top and bottom and those things looked like they had been in a truck demolition derby. Not only did the drivers skin them so did others parking beside them in a truck stop. The trailers we have with either 9,11, or 13 dont get tore up as much

226 lights on my rig and haven't had any issues in almost half a million miles since I installed them I guess I just know how to wire properly even though I hate doing it. Staying off ag talk allows a little time for "playing" with lights on the weekends when not so "busy". My truck, my time, my rules.

LEDs and modern wiring harnesses make keeping lights working pretty much a non issue if done right. If you use electrical tape and scotch locks well.....

Keep them working? The only time I spend with lights is adding them. If you buy cheap lights, you get cheap lights.  If you buy newer good LED's with newer harnesses, you don't have issues. I am not saying you never will, but its extremely rare.

And yes the added lights do help you stand out.  Remember being visible in this day and age requires you are brighter than the other drivers cell phone.

some extra lights also help when backing up or making turns as well.

They are not for everybody, but there's nothing wrong with having pride in your rig. Some people sit at the bar, some people watch TV, others polish trucks/tractors and add chicken lights and other accessories.

Nice hopper fastdeere , you must be like me. I enjoy fixing or improving things on my trucks in my downtime. Nothing wrong with that.

With LEDs and properly routed and connected wires, having a light out shouldn't be an issue. I added a bunch of lights to my trailer this summer(not a hopper), what a pain. Just ordered a new trailer a few weeks ago and went with the additional light package right from the factory.

Just south of Fort Wayne, IN
I added a second row of lights to our 04 Wilson. I used a step drill bit and a electric fish tape to pull wire up from bottom row. Not rocket science just takes some time and you need to use dielectric grease on all grounds and plan on cleaning existing grounds up while you have hem off.

Highly suggest running all grounds through the plug instead of chassis.

Many companies sell pre-made harnesses with a certain number of lights per foot.  They really are not that expensive either and they come fully sealed and ready to go. very few headaches to worry about.

I dont think its worth it to maintain another row. There was a trailer in front of me at the grain elevator today that had 73 lights on it. Looked cool but I wouldnt want it. I have a wilson with double rows and I always keep a spare red and amber light in the truck. They will pull you over in ND if one light is out.

Scotch locks??? That's just asking for wiring problems right there.....

Add the extra lights it's not that hard to do and maintain don't listen to all the haters!!

The scotch locks and tape comment was intended to say how not to do it. I built a harness for one of our trailers a couple years ago. Heat shrink but connectors, adhesive lined heat shrink, and grounding back through the harness should prevent any problems.
