Generally, I think the farther ahead, the better. It becomes a mechanical issue for outfits with tall cabs though.

I experimented with mounting the antenna on the hood of the Challenger. The cab was too high and blocked the signal from some birds while I was going southward. Once I installed T2 in the EZ, I was no longer concerned about height so I made a frame to stick the antenna ahead of the cab edge by about 18".

All of my installs are on solid frame outfits. Results may vary on articulated outfits
