Driftless SW Wisconsin | You didn't mention what planter you have, however here are some pictures of a setup planting 30" beans into 30" corn stalks and weeds. In sod I would go with good vee openers and Trashwheels alone. Here in corn stalks the coulter helps cut the stalks. In heavy wet ground underneath one or two Curvetine closing wheels per row helps chip in the slot for good seed to soil contact.
Note last picture was taken just to the right of the previous one. This customer had intended to work this field but it got away from him. Heavy Wisconsin clay. Note the clear area between the vee opener and closing wheels. Also note that even though this customer is running a 3/4" wide, 16" dia 13 wave coulter there are STILL stiff compacted sidewalls in this clay soil.
This is because the rear edge of the vee openers sold in the US are about 1-1/4" wide at the top rear edge of the slot - wider than most feasible coulter blades. This is why the Curvetine helps so much. In this situation however the 12" dia std rubber tire is holding the 13" dia Curvetine up from where we would really like it to be - customer would have been better off with two Curvetines per row but he had an excellent stand here despite the conditions as I recall. jmho.
