Subject: Does tile pay off quickly on sidedress farms

WC IN
1. We had a 12 bu loss in yield from pattern tile areas in 2012 drought.
1a. If this result was so unlikely than why do tile companies sell gates to shut off the tile flow?

2. We are only increasing our yields about 8 bu on a 5 year average where we sidedress. Several of these years have been extremely wet.
2a. My theory is that most who are seeing 40bu benefit are really seeing yield losses due to n loss.

3. Tiling is pretty popular in this area and a lot of friends feel tile pay off much quicker than I am showing.

4. I don't believe I am biased at all since we have owned our own tile plow for 10 years... I THOUGHT it would pay much better than it has

5. Tile will pay very big dividends if we have spots that drown out. We can turn a wet spot from zero to 200, no doubts... But can you change 175 into 215 without n loss being a factor? I doubt it.

6. I will admit this could be a very local issue and soil types will surely vary the returns but I want you guys to consider the chances going from about 175 to 215 on sidedressed corn. Not from zero to 200 or preplant.

7. I have a neighbor who showed me his yield maps where he benefited by tiling and the only major difference I see we have is he preplants. We both are Coc, fall chisel, soil type, farming sometimes just across the fence from each other... He is tiling like crazy and we are going slow.. In fact I may do very few patterns in the future choosing instead to hit those zero areas or replant areas.

8. We have 11 different pattern systems but we only have done 4 complete fields so I think I have really good side by side comparisons. Heck I can't even find a big yield increase right over a tile.. It's just amazes me.. I would have bet tile was paying off much quicker if I had not seen those five year ave yield maps.. In fact I pretty much just assumed it was paying off for years without even really analyzing the situation.
