West KY, Miss River County | Hedgie, good points. I was on a Production Credit board during the disaster of the 80's. Much of what you listed was the only thing that saved many farmers. Operations that held together in many instances were multigenerational operations with relatively low equipment costs and a fair amount of owed land. Young farmers with expensive equipment on rented land were the early losses. There were exceptions on all sides in both directions but when these three things came together they were strong influences.
Whitedirt, if you weren't running your own operation during the crash of the 80's I would be a little slower to try and call a man out, particularly given a list of observations like you were given. I believe I would wait about 5 years before I got to feeling too smug about myself. |
